About the Eastern Cape: The general area is incredibly diverse in fauna and flora. Four different climatic regions coincide here, as well as seven floral biomes, (one of a few places in the world to boast this diversity). The bush varies from fynbos to temperate forest, with impenetrable thickets and grassland savanna side by side. Altitude ranges from 400 feet to 3000 feet above sea level, so temperature also varies, from snow and frost in winter ( May to August ), to heatwaves and thunderstorms in Summer. However extreme conditions are rare, with mild days and cool nights being the norm.
The whole area is steeped in history, having seen much of the clashes between colonists and indigenous peoples ( the Xhosa Tribe ) in the 1800s. Ruins of forts dot the landscape and colourful local historians offer tours at very reasonable rates. Outdoor activities range from horseriding on the beach to flyfishing and mountain climbing ( and even snowskiing ), to deepsea fishing and diving. The immense diversity in climate and vegetation has allowed this Eastern Cape area to flourish as a haven for game.
The historical occurrence of huge herds of African Buffalo and Elephant, as well as the king of beasts, the majestic Lion, has led to concerned conservationists and landowners joining forces in restocking large areas with these species, further increasing the province’s attraction for the international traveller and hunter.
Medical facilities are close by, with air evacuation available. The staff are well trained to deal with any emergency that might arise. If the client has any specific medical condition or special medical needs, this information should be given on booking to ensure that such condition is managed correctly.
Clothing can generally be light, with a couple of sets of cold weather gear.
Hikers will need good walking boots (it is recommended that they are broken in) as the terrain can be rocky and steep.
Sun creams and hats are also recommended since our sun is harsh, even in Winter.
Security is an issue that must be borne in mind. We have been fortunate in our area in that we do not have many incidents of violent crime, and the preventive measures in place are very effective in keeping the client and his belongings safe. Handguns are not recommended, unless it is for hunting.
